British golf has not produced too many international challengers in recent years, but in the last fifty years one man managed to challenge American dominance of the majors, that man was Nick Faldo. Now a successful TV pundit, as well as former Ryder Cup captain, in his prime Nick Faldo was the winner of six golf majors.
Detractors of Nick Faldo point to the relative lack of professional golf titles, although thirty nine professional tournament wins is more than many professional golfers achieve. Faldo though was always a challenger when it came to the likes of the Masters and Open Championship, each of which produced three of his major titles. Even in the US Open and PGA Championship he managed to come second in both. Even today Faldo still competes at golf’s Open Championship, and although not a contender any more still is far from last in the final table.
