Irons

In any set of golf clubs a golfer is likely to have six or more irons, with additional wedges as well. Even though sand wedges and pitching wedges are not called irons they are in fact iron clubs. Iron clubs have a shorter shaft than a wood, and also come with a flat angled face. This allows for shorter shots but also allows for controlled shots from the rough. The numbers of the irons relate to the angle of the club, a higher number means that it is closer to 90 degrees. Thus a nine iron is lofted to about 41-42 degrees.

Wedges have a greater loft than a nine iron and go from a pitching wedge, to a gap wedge, a sand wedge, lob wedge and ultra lob wedge. Most professional golfers are likely to just make use of a sand wedge and pitching wedge, but a golfer’s bag can include more.
