| The Ryder Cup
Arguably the most famous golf team tournament contested, the Ryder Cup is now a hotly contested event occurring every two years. Originally a direct tournament between professional golfers from Britain and the United States, it has continued to evolve since the first match in 1926. The dominance of American golfers after 1945 quickly saw the British team allow Irish golfers to compete on their side, before also allowing European golfers to compete as a combined Europe team from 1979. Now a much more competitive event, the cup is won on a points scoring system after players compete in fourballs, foursomes, and single rounds of golf over three days of competition. The competitive nature of the Ryder Cup has on occasion overflowed, with some notable arguments occurring, but in the main, players have still been able to relax with each other after the golf has finished.
