| The Handicap System
Away from professional golf, there is a handicap system in place to ensure that competition is fair for amateurs playing stroke play or match play. In its most simplest of terms the handicap is a number relating to the expected number of strokes over par it will take to complete a round of golf.
The handicap system though can also be a confusing thing though, and although easy enough to calculate when an amateur is playing on the same course each time, does vary with a change of course. The golf handicap is calculated based on the average number of strokes it takes a player to complete a course over par. Some courses though are more difficult than others, depending on course length, and other factors. This means someone with a handicap of 5 on one course could be a far better golfer than someone with a 5 handicap on an easier course.
