Woods

Designed for long distance drives, woods are an essential part of the golfer’s equipment. Most commonly used off of the tee, or from a second fairway shot, the large head of the wood ensures that the ball is hit with maximum speed for maximum distance. One particular type of wood is the driver, or in golf terms the 1 wood, which offers the greatest distance. The driver is normally joined in the golf bag by a higher number fairway wood, which offers greater control at less striking distance. It depends on the length of the course as to whether the fourteen clubs in a golf bag consist of a driver and two woods or some other combination of woods and irons.

Although now made primarily of titanium, the name of woods has stuck from the original Persimmon wood used to make them. The design of woods though is continually developed through the use of new material which offers even greater distance and also greater control over the stroke.
