Golf in the Olympics

There has been a lot of recent debate amongst golf professionals and the followers of the game as to whether golf should be a Summer Olympic event. It has twice previously been a summer sport, at Paris in 1900 and St Louis in 1904, but has not appeared since. Golf today is predominantly a professional sport, and although this no longer disqualifies entrance at the Olympics, it does raise the question as to whether a professional golfer would rather win one of the Four Majors or the Olympic title.

There is also the debate about who would compete in any Olympic golf tournament, the top 100 in the world? Or two from each country? Or some other qualifying criteria?

Around the world though the major golf associations are certainly lobbying for an imminent return to the Summer Olympics, and the fact that tennis has already returned in the last twenty years is a pointer at least for the future.
