Stroke Play

Stroke play is the most common form of golf played by both amateur and professional. Most tournaments that are shown on television will be stroke play tournaments, with the basic premise that whoever completes the tournament in the fewest number of shots is the winner. A tournament can consist of one or more rounds, although most professional tournaments are completed over four rounds of golf. There is no guarantee that a winner will complete a tournament under par, normally 288 shots (four rounds of 72), and a number of prominent tournaments have been won in a greater number of strokes than this due to the difficulty of the course and adverse weather. At the end of four rounds there may also be additional holes to play if there is two or more golfers tied for the win, a sudden death shootout could occur until one golfer completes the additional holes in fewer strokes when compared to their opponent.
