HANDICAP SYSTEMS IN GOLF

The term ‘handicap’ is associated with an amateur golfer. It’s a measure of ability of an amateur golfer to play the complete golf course of 18 holes. Handicaps can appear in either match play or stroke play competitions. The number of total strokes above ‘par’ a player can achieve while playing well generally represents a handicap. In a stroke play tournament, the handicap of the golfer is deducted from their gross score after the round’s end. The standings are determined based on this calculated ‘net’ score. In a match play tournament, the handicap systems are based on each hole’s handicap rating. The easy holes will receive handicap strokes at last and toughest holes receive handicap strokes first. In most cases, handicap calculation is a tedious task. The rules and regulations on handicap calculations are dissimilar for different countries. But the course difficulty is taken into account in handicap systems. Professional golf does not employ handicap systems.
