In professional golf it is rare for a professional golfer to be penalised by penalty strokes, there are though some circumstances that do result in strokes being added to a player’s score. The most common penalty is a simple one stroke penalty for a golf ball being lost, or for it being hit out of bounds. There are though also less common penalty shots added to a golf score, including for the movement of a ball without a stroke being played. Even the incorrect number of clubs in a golf bag can result in penalty strokes.
There are though even less common errors that cause penalties to be incurred with harsher penalties. The playing of the wrong golf ball will result in two strokes. Even more serious breaking of the rules can even result in disqualification, though this normally means some form of cheating including improper playing of the round of golf.
